The pass opened Friday night by eroding around the Sanibel side of the remaining sheet pile wall. This area was the last to be dredged and the remaining beach berm was not strong enough to hold.
Approximately half of the sheet pile wall will be removed Monday, August 3. This is being done in an attempt to relieve some of the current in the pass so divers can work to remove the old creosote bridge pilings. If the current is sufficiently reduced, the bridge pilings will be removed prior to the remaining sheet pile wall.
Posting of the Wulfert Flats Pole and Troll zone is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4th.
Below is an aerial taken by the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation on Friday, prior to the breach.

The County intends to authorize additional dredging up to 40,000 cyds with a completion date of October. The additional material will be dependent on the volume of shoaling experienced when the sheetpile wall is removed.
Marking of Wulfert Channel and the 'Pole and Troll' zone in Wulfert Flats is anticipated prior to opening Blind Pass.

-The opening of Blind Pass , or removal of the last sheetpile wall, could occur as early as August 1. The opening will not occur prior to completion of the dredging in the Gulf or prior to marking the Pole & Troll zone in Wulfert Flats.
-Lee County is considering authorizing additional dredging in the Gulf after the pass is ‘opened’ to extend the dredging as long as October. The additional work stems from infilling expected to occur immediately after the sheetpile wall is removed.
-The Contractor is expected to continue working 24 hours per day until the initial work is completed in the Gulf.
-Lee County will be removing up to 20 of the old bridge timber pilings that were found in the channel prior to removal of the sheetpile wall. The total number of pilings still in place from the old bridge is not known.

The following tasks were completed during the weeks of May 03rd thru May 23rd:
-The Contractor dredged an estimated 13,545 cubic yards during the reporting period. (4,693 cyds during the week of May 23rd). Work efficiency was approximately 31%. The efficiency for the project to date is 41%. Efficiency is calculated as the ratio of total dredging time to total work time.
-The Contractor encountered what is assumed to be a piling from the old temporary bridge on May 15th. The temporary bridge was built to bypass traffic while the current bridge was under construction in the early 80's.
-Production during the reporting period was slowed due to mechanical malfunctions with the booster pump. The additional pump is required to move the shell in the dredge material to the fill site.
The following tasks are anticipated during the week of May 24th thru May 30th:
-A Least Tern nest was identified south of the fill area on Sunday, May 24th. All project personnel and equipment are required to avoid the nest by a minimum of 300 feet.
-The County will locate the old pilings in the dredge area and identify if they should be removed. -Dredging operations are expected to alternate between Dredge 'Nate' in the Gulf and Dredge 'Michael' landward of the remaining sheet pile wall between the hours of 4am and midnight. It is expected ‘Nate’ will work during the morning hours and ‘Michael’ during the evening. It is expected only 1 dredge will work at any given time due to limitations with the booster pump and shell content in the sand.
Outstanding and other Items to Note:
-The required production rate to complete the project by July 8 is 776 cubic yards per day. The project records indicate the Contractor has not maintained this production rate for a period of 7 consecutive days without both dredges operational.
-J.N. 'Ding' Darling NWR and Lee County will be marking the boundaries of the ‘Pole and Troll” zone in Wulfert Flats by July 8th. Enforcement of the zone will begin immediately after the regulatory signs / buoys are installed. Efforts will be made to educate boaters of the new requirements prior to enforcement beginning. Regulations require all outboard motors to be raised out of the water, and vessels to move by trolling motors or other non-mechanical means.

Weekly Progress Report
March 1st thru March 28th, 2009
The following tasks were completed during the weeks of March 1st thru March 28th:
- The Contractor dredged an estimated 18,435 cubic yards during the reporting period 3/1/09 to 3/21/09. (8,300 during March 15th to 21st.) Work efficiency was approximately 40% for this reporting period. The Contractor dredged an estimated 5,848 cubic yards during the reporting period 3/22/09 to 3/28/09. Work efficiency was approximately 45% for this reporting period. The efficiency for the project to date is 49%. Efficiency is calculated as the ratio of total dredging time to total work time.
- The County and Consultant completed the review of pre-dredge surveys and determined an increase of approximately 25,397 cyds above the estimated volume will be dredged to complete the project design. The increase is the volume of material that "drifted" into the project area between the design survey in 2005 and the pre-dredge survey in December 2008.
- The Contractor completed removal of the nearshore placement material on Friday, March 20th. The Contractor began removal of the unsuitable material or clayey material on Friday, March 20th. This material will be dewatered and placed in an upland facility. This work is expected to take 3 weeks or to April 9th.
- Dredge "Nate" began work in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, March 10th. This work will be very weather dependent due to the size of equipment and nature of the work. Production is anticipated to decrease substantially for this work. The total volume in the Gulf is approximately 50,000 cyds.
- Small pieces of cement, asphalt, and cemented shell were discovered in the Gulf side dredge area on Monday, March 9th. The material appears to be spread thorough the Gulf side work area. A maximum of 10 cyds have been dredged to thru March 23rd.
- Due to inclement weather and necessary pump repairs, Dredge "Nate" did not conduct operations from Wednesday, March 25th to Tuesday, March 31st.
The following tasks are anticipated during the week of March 29th thru April 04th:
- The Contractor is expected to begin operations as early as 4:00 am for the remainder of the project. Weather permitting dredging will occur in the Gulf as opposed to Wulfert Channel during the early morning hours. However, if sea conditions are not conducive, dredging in Wulfert Channel may begin in Wulfert Channel during these times.
- Completion of dredging the unsuitable or 'clayey' material is anticipated to be completed by Monday, April 4th. All of the remaining material will be placed directly on the beach. Dredging on a 24 hr. per day basis is authorized for this work.
Outstanding and other Items to Note:
-Truck hauling of the unsuitable material placed in the containment cell is expected to begin the week of April 12th. The work is expected to last 18 days.
- The Contractor is still investigating the addition of equipment to aid the removal of small sized cemented shell, asphalt, and concrete from the dredge material. Resolution is anticipated prior to May 1.
- Due to the increase volume of material to be removed, the project completion date will be extended to July 8, 2009. Blind Pass is not expected to be open prior to this date.
-The volume of material to be placed on the beach, nearshore, and removed for upland disposal is as follows:
- Beach Placement - 110,290 cyds
- Nearshore Placement - 32,657 cyds
- Upland Placement - 9,736 cyds

Blind Pass Project Update
The following tasks were completed during the weeks of Jan. 25th thru Jan. 31st
-The Contractor dredged an estimated 7,607 cubic yards during the week of January 25th. Work efficiency for the week was approximately 70% for a project average of 46% to date. Efficiency is calculated as the ratio of total dredging time to total work time.
-The Contractor completed a deep water access corridor along the permitted channel on Tuesday, January 27th. The access channel will allow both dredges to move into the beach compatible material for night time work if production rates require. Night time work is only allowed for the beach compatible material closer to the bridge and may begin at the Contractors discretion based on production rates.
- Lee County placed temporary buoys along the proposed Wulfert Flats Pole and Troll zone southern boundary on Wednesday, January 28th. The markers will remain unit at least February 11th for boaters to review.
-The Contractor placed temporary markers in Wulfert Channel on Wednesday, January, 28th. The markers are being used to enable the dredge to pivot in a more effective manner across the dredge area.
The following tasks are anticipated during the week of Feb. 01st thru Feb. 07th
-The Contractor should complete excavation operations from within the containment cell by Friday, February 6th. The material is being removed in order to provide optimal storage for non-beach compatible material that will be dredged from Wulfert Channel.
- Lee County will conduct noise level testing on the Contractor?s equipment by Saturday, February 7th. The test will be used to compare the equipments emissions with noise ordinance requirements.
Outstanding and other Items to Note
- Lee County is requesting a permit modification from the State of Florida and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to increase the channel width seaward of Blind Pass Bridge. Authorization is expected in early April.
Filling of the containment cell and truck hauling of the non-beach compatible material is anticipated to begin in early March.
- The Contractor will make a second sweep of the Wulfert Channel dredge area after completion of the first sweep. The second pass will remove the non-beach compatible material for dewatering and transport at an upland facility.
